Terrible. Terrible. Terrible. I'm in the process of throwing away about $150 dollars worth of food that went bad during the power outage last week. It went out at 10:30pm. The weather was perfect, so no blaming a storm this time. I called, and the dispatcher said a crew was working on it and that power would be restored in "about an hour." When I woke up the next morning, it was STILL out. I called and the dispatcher said that an underground line was damaged and that they had planned on backfeeding it from another line...which turned out to be damaged as well. She said that it would now take "much longer" to fix. I asked her to define "much", and she said, "I have no idea." Wow. Hey, Kit Carson. How about you guys do a little maintenance from time to time?? The only thing you guys do reliably is billing. Now that's what I call service! (Said with overflowing sarcasm.) Back to throwing away all this food.

We lose power almost weekly, sometimes more. Here I sit without power going on 6 hours now, and it’s about to be negative 4. We don’t have propane. We lost power for 72 hours a few weeks ago and they won’t accept our claim to replace the food in our fridge because weather is an act of god apparently. So, I lost my food and can’t replace because we’re on food stamps. I’m cold. I’m tired of this. This has to be illegal, to not have power so often for so long. I call for ETA’s and the staff is rude, IF they pickup.

I’m upgrading my rating from a single star because there have been some improvements here. HOWEVER, customers should report Kit Carson to the Better Business Bureau and the FTC if they run into shady practices. To summarize my previous review, there were such egregious practices that it really warranted multiple complaints. Just because they have a monopoly over electricity in this county doesn’t mean that we don’t have basic consumer rights. Problems included: not providing billing reports at all resulting in total confusion as to what money is owed for four initial months of service, refusing to remove or change a credit card from automatic billing when requested by the credit card holder, demanding to see a marriage certificate in order to add a female to the account even when requested by existing account holder, refusing to accept female account holders decisions regarding the account even when they are listed first in the account, giving wrong information about their ability to terminate service to a property resulting in more than six months of unnecessary billing, not terminating a service when requested (it took three months from the date requested), acknowledging that it was their fault for not terminating service and promising to pro-rate the next bill only to go back on that promise and actually erroneously double charge (never refunded), no record keeping of conversations regarding accounts and service, totally inconsistent information from different staff members, and near total lack of follow through on the part of staff after promising to do things. None of these things are remotely acceptable. The pandemic hit Kit Carson hard. It is my understanding that the office staff now includes former field workers. The field workers have always been excellent. Their online system has improved and their automatic billing is now viewable online. I’m still going to be one my guard here, and do the following: I would never take what is said over the phone for granted, but instead would demand written confirmation of any account changes the day of making them. Any weirdness with billing I will report immediately to the BBB and FTC. Furthermore, if they ever again refuse to make changes to my account simply because I am not the “man of the household” I am going to raise holy hell. There should be no place for that kind of misogyny anywhere. I am grateful for the improvements made here and I am willing to give credit where it is due.
